This position is located in the Research Support Services Branch (RSSB), Office of Operations Management (OOM), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH) at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, Montana.
U.S. Citizenship requirement met by closing date. Position is subject to a background investigation.
As a Biologist you will serve as a Media Laboratory manager and use scientific professional knowledge, techniques, and methods to assist investigators in carrying out projects to meet the research goals of the various laboratories. Additionally, you will perform the following duties and functions:
Ensure timely preparation of high quality growth media and buffers critical in all in vitro experiments involved with propagation of bacterial, tissue, and cell cultures.
Analyze and discuss with scientific staff concerns involving pH adjustments, molarity calculations, chemical composition, antibiotic solutions, stability, concentration, chemical degradation curves, and Tris pH mixing calculations.
Prepare a wide variety of specialized agar plates and broths including Luria used for cloning proteins.
Periodically evaluate protocols to ensure they are meeting Rocky Mountain Laboratories research needs.
Prepare written instructions to guide others in the performance of standard laboratory procedures.
Basic
Qualifications:
A. You must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university.
OR
You must have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.
In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements indicated above, you must meet the additional experience and/or education requirement as described below:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS- 09 level in the Federal Service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following tasks: assisting in developing, planning, and preparing media for biomedical research; collecting, studying, developing, assembling, and analyzing research data; developing and preparing portions of reports, analytical interpretations, conclusions, or recommendations, typically for publication; using a variety of laboratory instruments to perform analyses; and modifying existing protocols and procedures to use in conducting studies.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
OR
Have completed three (3) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field.
OR
Have a combination of related post baccalaureate education and specialized experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
